Abstract: The presentation will address challenges faced by students who are active military or veterans; agencies that offer assistance; and a list of “Best Practices” for serving active military and/or veteran students. Challenges facing our military students include the turmoil associated with the process of deployment and the actual deployment where connectivity can be a major issue. After returning from a deployment, the student is faced with the challenge of transitioning back to civilian life and reconnecting with family and friends. Mental and medical issues may follow the student on his/her return to the classroom. Instructors must be aware of what Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) are and the symptoms of both in order to counsel the student as to what services are available. Instructors must keep in mind that the student may not be aware of any new disability or may refuse to admit to having a disability. Handout will be provided.
