Abstract: The purpose of this study is to consider how early childhood education students in a social foundations course, were impacted by their exploration of culture, cultural self-identity, and cultural competence. The integration of technology included utilization of the Internet to conduct research, use of digital cameras, and creation of Power Point presentations. The preservice teachers reflected on culture as it defines who they are, as well as their being more culturally aware and prepared as teachers to interact with a diverse population of students. In this study, the term culture is defined as beliefs, values, perceptions, norms, actions, artifacts, and language shared within a group, and passed down to succeeding generations. The researcher considers culture and self-identity as being intertwined: culture impacts identity. Through the course activities, the teacher candidates increased their cultural literacy and technological literacy skills.
