Abstract: Rubrics are quickly becoming commonly used assessment tools in online classes. At the graduate level, rubrics can serve as useful guides for students as they complete their assignments. The use of rubrics is especially important in online classes where graduate students do not receive face-to-face interaction with teachers. This paper analyzes current research about the implementation of rubrics in classes. The paper also presents a rationale of how rubrics can help online graduate students with decision making, problem solving, critical and creative thinking, and responsibility taking. Finally, the paper proposes ways to analyze students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of rubrics in online graduate courses.
