Abstract: Open source has long been a popular point of discussion for professionals and laymen in many arenas where software selection is financially expensive, support lacking, and high levels of training are needed to educate the users. Within the arena of education, where budgets are limited, open source packages provide the opportunity for educators to reduce pressure on the budget by providing fully functional, low cost supported applications for learners. This is particularly true within the context of educational gaming where open source platforms may provide viable, less expensive alternatives to the current prohibitive costs of game design.
