Electronic Team Journaling and Service Learning
Abstract: While much literature exists on the benefit of traditional journals and service-learning, it is scant when considering the infusion of technology into the journaling process. As a result, the purpose of this study was to determine the impact of introducing an electronic team journal to undergraduate students enrolled in a service-learning based course. The service learning course paired sophomore level university pre-service physical education majors with local middle school students using a university-community partnership. The experience lasted 9 weeks and mandated about 2 hours of service per week. A mixed-method approach for data collection and analyses was used. Preliminary results indicate that students had a favorable perception of electronic team journals and that this open medium helped their preparation toward the shared service-learning experience. Further analysis and discussion will include how the technology impacted other student learning outcomes and perceptions.
