Abstract: Through the support of the U.S. Department of Education Partnership in Quality Education (PQE) Grant, the University of Houston-Downtown Department of Urban Education established a partnership with the Alief Independent School District in Houston, Texas. The purpose of the grant is to improve teacher preparation through the collaborative efforts of participating universities and school districts. To encourage student-faculty-mentor communication and to make the student interns’ reflections available 24/7, the electronic bulletin board feature within WebCT is used. Students are required to participate in this virtual learning community at least five times during the semester to exchange ideas. This paper will investigate models employed with various teacher-training programs across the country. It will also report strategies the authors have used to facilitate this virtual learning community of student interns.
