Abstract: This study sought to understand pre-service teachers’ reflections on teaching through the use of FlipGrid, a video-based platform, during their early field experience conducted at a STEM Institute that provided learning activities for upper elementary and middle school students from the local school district. Using thematic analysis, we examined the transcriptions from the videos responding to the prompt, “Recap the past two weeks at STEM with students by choosing one word that describes how you feel about your experience and then describe why you chose that as your word.” The purpose was to understand how the framing of the teaching experience through one word impacted the way the pre-service teachers talked about their experiences and how video-based reflection developed authentic responses.
