Building Networks for English as a Second Language Advocacy through online Graduate and Undergraduate Courses.
Abstract: English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers in rural areas often find themselves isolated by both geographical distance and the lack of empathetic peer teachers who have familiarity with ESL issues and the cultures of English Language (EL) students. Additionally the threat of COVID-19 has further distanced ESL teachers from colleagues in their field. Some ESL teachers may also be restricted to virtual only instruction which makes teaching ESL even more challenging. The use of online meetings to bolster connections and comradery between ESL teachers as they seek to advocate for their EL students adds a valuable layer to the their effectiveness. The results of a survey conducted with ESL teachers illustrates the issues and challenges facing rural ESL teachers and provides a new approach to improving the morale and efficacy of ESL teachers in isolation.
