Data Literacy via Fake News

Abstract: This presentation explains how educators can help students be data literate consumers of fake news as part of media literacy. Using a communications model, fake news data is examined in terms of data journalism. Data and statistical literacy skills are defined. Examples of misrepresented data, including data visualization, are explained. Several data literacy education resources and activities are provided.
