Promoting effective teaching of technical mathematics through the use of ICTs (Blackboard collaborate and WhatsApp)
Abstract: The study examined how five technical maths lecturers as well as a class of 30 TVET College students, managed to use ICTs such as blackboard collaborate and WhatsApp to improve their teaching and learning of technical mathematics in one selected TVET College in the Free State Province. This was investigated through open-ended questionnaires based on the technological pedagogical content knowledge model (TPACK). Five TVET collage technical mathematics lecturers were sampled from three colleges to take part in this study. The lecturers made use of blackboard collaborate and WhatsApp whereby some assessment questions were uploaded on the system and the students had to use a link to assess the tasks through trial-and-error and completed the questions while working both individually and in groups. The study reviewed that the lecturers initially struggled with the use of ICTs (blackboard collaborate and WhatsApp) in generating the questions but gradually gapped the concepts through try-and-error methods and this has made them to abandon their traditional methods of teaching to embrace technical conceptually skills and strategies of teaching technical mathematics in colleagues. It is recommended that all TVET collage lecturers who are teaching technical mathematics but have not yet undergone any skill training such as ICT training should be forced to do so since teaching of technical mathematics requires a hands-on experience in order to handle the subject effectively in class.
