Abstract: University faculty are tasked with developing curriculum that promotes academic growth and student engagement. Further, institutions of higher education are placing more emphasis on creating effective learning environments that result in student success and retention. However, faculty often express challenges in maintaining student engagement. By collecting student engagement data, faculty can better understand how to structure their curricula and instructional approaches to better support their learners. Faculty can capture student engagement data after an activity, throughout the course, at the end of the semester, and at various points during students program of studies. Further, different data collection methods may be utilized for online instructors and faculty who teach in brick and mortar classrooms. Therefore, this presentation seeks to define student engagement and appropriate data collect methods for higher education faculty.
