Effective instruction: A two-way street of transferring skills from and to face-to-face and virtual learning environments
Abstract: As the use of online learning has evolved, research has focused on the learner, the use of technology, and the underlying pedagogy that is important in designing a quality online course or program. Some research has also addressed the role and effectiveness of the instructor in online environments (Lehman & Conceição, 2010). This paper explores the characteristics of effective online instruction from multiple perspectives in the literature (e.g. Kirwan & Roumell, 2015; Savery, 2005; Welch, Orso, Doolittle & Areepattemannil, 2015), including underlying pedagogical practices that are important for an effective online learning experience. A discussion of the findings includes future research and implications for effective teaching and learning in terms of transferability of skills between face-to-face and virtual learning environments in a mutual fashion.
