Abstract: Within the context of distance learning, students form inter-cultural learning communities unconstrained by time and place. Technology transcends geographic boundaries and contributes to the migration of knowledge and understanding across cultures. Facilitators can play an important role to help heighten intercultural awareness by fostering a better understanding of the nuances of languages, values and attitudes of diverse cultures to maximize the opportunity for knowledge sharing and reflective thinking skills. This paper describes methodologies and best practices to develop exemplary online learning communities that both preserve and share cultural ways of knowing.
