Abstract: This Roundtable is a follow up to a session offered in 2018. The purpose is to present some ongoing research and practice on empathy in online education. To date, the research has been designed to determine an expert view of the importance of empathy in teaching and learning and to discover barriers and supports to its development in teachers and students in online courses. Findings from some recent dissertation work regarding student perceptions of empathetic teachers will be presented, as well. Participants will be encouraged to bring their ideas and experiences in online teaching and learning in order to discuss whether empathy is a worthwhile goal and how fostering empathy may be investigated and. achieved.
