Everyone Can Create An Open Educational Resource
Abstract: Self-publishing in education has changed. We all know how Open Educational Resources empower students. They reduce cost, allow for frequent updates, and bypass traditional publishing. As the academic world quickly moves to digital textbooks at all levels, OERs are changing the way educational content is being delivered and consumed, not in the future but right now. But with PDFs, ePubs, MOOCs, ePubs, and a plethora of Websites, the technology can be daunting. So where to begin? This presentation will explore the latest in self-publishing techniques for education, including a look at the author’s case study in which he applies his extensive research by incorporating into his traditional classroom a textbook-length OER PDF; a full-featured, interactive Web site; an iTunes U MOOC, now serving over 9,000 students; and a multi-touch digital textbook for mobile learning. This session is a fun and fast-paced presentation by Apple Distinguished Educator Harry St. Ours in self-publishing techniques for K-20 teachers and administrators, and anyone wishing to self-publish their own OER. Attendees will leave this session enthused about self-publishing, armed with the knowledge they will need to succeed in creating OERs, and with a clear understanding of the tools and techniques used.
