Updating Data: Don’t Drop Me! Using the Learning Management System to Alert Students About Their Pending Drop for Non-Payment Status
Abstract: After several years of implementation, the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL) returns to the Student Dropped Non-Payment initiative and reflects on impact of the project. Student Account Services at the University of Central Florida wanted to address and decrease the number of students dropped for non-payment from their courses. Working with the CDL, one method to address the drop rates was to notify students of their pending drop for non-payment status by using the campus’ learning management system (LMS). This aligned with student feedback. Students wanted more of their informational notifications in one place and stated that they were not checking their University email or the University’s student portal as often as they were in the LMS system. For this reason, it was believed that students would respond better and faster if the message was delivered in the LMS. Reviewing data confirmed this initiative decreased the number of students dropped.
