Abstract: This study explored college students’ experiences of using the RISE model as a guide to structure their feedback to peers in a lower-division asynchronous online course. The findings of the study provide insight for instructors in developing protocols or selecting models for meaningful peer feedback in online course discussion forum. Twenty-eight participants were undergraduate students enrolled in an online general education course from a middle-sized university in the Northwest of the United States. Students’ participation was voluntary and anonymous. Data were collected from a survey embedded in course Moodle. Results revealed that the RISE model was helpful for participants to provide meaningful feedback to their peers (strongly agreed, 32.1%; agreed, 67.9%). An understanding of students’ experiences in discussion forums and the experiences of using the RISE model can contribute to the knowledge base for planning and effective online teaching.
