Abstract: The paper presents an exploratory study that sought to understand how to prepare students to effectively present orally. The research led to the development of E-GOALS, a set of comprehensive meta-criteria to be used as guides and instructional supports as well as assessment criteria in a wide range of situations. E-GOALS was designed and tested in a 400-level Humanities senior seminar at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in a fully online set of courses. NJIT is a four-year university located in Newark New Jersey USA that serves as the main Science and Technology University for the state. The senior seminar serves as a culminating experience for all majors across the university to bring together the learning in an interdisciplinary department offering courses required in each of the four years of the school curriculum for all majors as part of the General education requirements (GER). The investigation was conducted over 20 semesters including full 15 week semesters, 6 week summer sessions, and Intersessions lasting 3 weeks. More than 500 students participated in the research and development of the E-GOALS criteria. The research showed a clear set of meta criteria that provides categories for students to analyze their own current state and work towards improvement is effective at assisting students to present more effectively and see clear avenues for improvement of their own workadn that of others.
