Abstract: Businesses have embraced the power of information as it relates to consumer data. Learning analytics (LA) affords the opportunity to personalize and improve the end-user learning experience. Moreover, it provides institutions, instructors, and students the opportunity to predict their performance in a course or degree. Harnessing learning analytics may ultimately assist in optimizing learning and maximizing success. This article provides an overview of the current state of learning analytics, provides a broad definition of learning analytics, and gives examples of popular LA tools. Trends, challenges and future directions are discussed as they relate to education.
