Share Paper: Using Twitter Chats with Rural Preservice Teachers: Welcome to the Virtual Teachers' Lounge

Abstract: In response to a growing need to better prepare teachers to work in rural areas, the author recently undertook revising an undergraduate instructional technology course to include Twitter chats, which could be utilized to connect prospective rural teachers with in-service rural educators and supporters. Initial reviews of student surveys, writings, and discussions indicate students believe Twitter chats enabled them to find new resources, direct their own professional development, and connect with other educators. Data also revealed they felt valued, accepted, and supported during Twitter chats, and most indicated they planned to continue using Twitter after the course ended. This virtual ...
