Abstract: Game-based learning seeks to capitalize on the psychological predisposition to engage in gaming, applying the same motivational mechanisms that game designers have applied in making video games, as an opportunity to make real world activities more engaging. Efforts to employ gamification strategies in the corporate environment have focused on the key target areas of motivation, recruitment, and training. Game-based learning provides a number of benefits and affordances to the corporate training environment. Game-based learning increases motivation, engagement, performance, and retention. Though despite empirical evidence supporting the benefits, there are critics and detractors who cite poorly designed games, costs, and ethics among the reasons for failure to adopt. Research has resulted in a number of design principles to emerge for the game-based training methodology. Empirical evidence exists to support the decision to used game-based training at successful companies, including L’Oreal, IBM, and Cisco. This paper presents a literature review to synthesize research and findings on serious games and gamification in the workplace.
