Abstract: Online virtual patient simulations were developed that report student clinical choices using the Experience API (xAPI). The resulting data provides instructors with useful analytics to guide formative feedback and in-class discussions. Numerous technical issues were encountered requiring programming and IT expertise. The biggest challenge encountered was to efficiently process raw xAPI data into meaningful analytics. Implementing xAPI should become easier as it becomes more widely adopted by authoring tools and learning management systems. The approach shows promise for assessing clinical reasoning skills in nursing and physician assistant students.
