Distance Learning Instructional Design: Assessing Professional Competence with Miller’s Pyramid

Abstract: Delivering pre-service education in an online environment provides ease of access and convenience to students preparing for a professional role Understanding the scope of that profession is fundamental to success as a professional, and the introductory course in an online program can provide a solid foundation towards achieving a professional identity Miller’s pyramid was used to evaluate the success of the introductory course in a pre-service online school library certification program Content analysis of course reflections from 401 students over eight semesters of coursework determined that the introductory course was establishing a foundation and moving students toward upper levels of the pyramid This study clarified the appropriateness of using Miller’s pyramid as an assessment tool
