Best Practices Session ID: 51385
  1. Marwin Britto
    University of Saskatchewan

Abstract: Retention and completion rates for students in online courses tend to be significantly lower than student in face-to-face courses To succeed in online courses, students require a range of requisite skills such as time-management strategies, technological competence, a proclivity toward self-directed learning, and strong self-motivation Accordingly, it is critical that prospective online students have the opportunity to assess their level of “readiness” for success in online courses Commercial and home-grown online readiness surveys offer prospective online students an assessment of their potential for academic success in an online course In addition, the survey results steer prospective students to support resources to address areas identified as obstacles This presentation will define and describe “online student readiness” surveys, justify their importance and value, and detail the advantages and disadvantages of commercial products vs homegrown ones
