Abstract: This study attempts to describe the lived experiences of subject matter experts in an online instructional design course. Their experiences shed some light on motivation and qualities of persistence in online professional development, especially when unanticipated barriers occur. The study indicated that learners exhibit fearlessness, propensity toward action, and a need for self-actualization. Design qualities that also emerged from these lived experiences included establishing mentoring relationships, setting a clear technological expectation, and supporting learning through a well-lit path set by good instructional design.
