Abstract: Online learning is embedded in primarily written communication. The majority of faculty are not schooled or skilled in supporting and developing the writing skills of students, and yet writing skills are critical for success in the online learning environment. Built on a foundation of writing in the disciplines literature, this presentation will showcase efforts to intentionally structure writing assignments to more effectively scaffold student writing success while limiting the faculty time investment. Examples will include a comparison of a graduate writing project with and without such scaffolding and the process of building a new online course project from scratch fully focused on scaffolded writing assignments.
