Abstract: Learning through Cultural Connections: The Northern Lights provides culturally relevant, science-based educational resources for Iñupiat residents of northern Alaska. Unique E-Learning and hands-on products integrate Iñupiat culture and language related to the northern lights with physical science. Targeting teachers and students in grades 4-8, as well as museum docents and guests, the resources include online video, animations, Web-based multimedia, digital recordings of stories, songs and dances by Iñupiat Elders, interactive museum exhibits and hands-on classroom activities. The program seeks to improve access to place-based, culturally relevant education and to heighten cultural awareness and understanding of science concepts. Preliminary results indicate the project is meeting these goals.
