Pedagogy and Online Course Design: A Practical Approach
Abstract: Research has shown that instruction is more effective, whether taught in a traditional classroom or online, when designed and largely influenced by sound pedagogical strategies and instructional design models. However, this concept may be difficult to put into practice when designing a course for an online environment, thus; limiting the potential effectiveness of an online course. This session will provide best practice guidelines on how a pedagogical concept can be practically implemented in an online course. More specifically it will demonstrate how two of the most influential pedagogical strategies- Gagne’s nine events of instruction and the Dick and Carey five learning components model, can influence the design and development of an online course at a higher education institution. Real course examples will be provided to demonstrate how pedagogy affects the elements of a complete course design from the lesson layout to final assessments in a learning management system.
