Abstract: Editing or publishing a book in interactive electronic format is challenging and requires careful decision-making, long term planning and a commitment to be successful What does one need to do to edit, author and publish an ebook successfully? In this workshop the facilitators will share their experiences of editing and publishing an ebook The facilitators will show examples of an interactive ebook and discuss how such ebooks are different from print books or passive ebooks Also, we will explore why one might be interested in e-authoring and publishing such an ebook The facilitators will provide tips and strategies for identifying the needed topics and issues for publication in their fields

Objectives

By the completion of the workshop participants will be able to: • identify the topic or issue that is worth publishing; • identify the steps of publishing an ebook; • develop a comprehensive collaborative/personal protocol for (co-)editing an ebook; • differentiate between the processes for publishing an interactive ebook compared to print; • develop the protocol and acquire the skills for selecting a platform for communication and managing updates between and among authors and editors; • suggestions on how to negotiate a draft proposal for an ebook and upload the draft for further comments and feedback; • create an interactive concept map for the book outlining the possible chapter titles; and, • embed multimedia features and hyperlinks in a document.

Topical Outline

In this workshop the facilitators will: • share their experiences of editing and publishing an ebook.; • show examples of an interactive ebook and; • discuss how such ebooks are different from print books or passive ebooks; • explore why one might be interested in e-authoring and publishing such an ebook; and, • provide tips and strategies for identifying the needed topics and issues for publication in participants’ ?elds. The facilitators will engage participants in the following activity: o group the participants on the basis of their areas of interest and expertise; and, o assist them in writing a book proposal; through: • developing their own online environment for announcements, communication and interaction; and, • producing a workable plan to manage such an environment. The workshop facilitators will: • demonstrate, teach and provide hands on experience about different available tools to add multimedia and interactive features in the book. The participants will also be able to understand the importance of using social networking tools for collaborative e-authoring of 21st century online interactive publications. In addition EdITLib.org is encouraged as a freely available resource to help authors distribute their eBooks, regardless of what publisher is being used.

Prerequisites

Academics, researchers, managers and all other professionals from industry and public and private sector organizations interested in publishing, editing and authoring electronic books should attend this workshop. No prior knowledge is required. However, participants should be interested in (co-) editing or (co-) publishing an ebook in their areas of expertise, or be interested in submitting their work for publication in an ebook. Participants should bring their own laptops to this workshop so as to engage in the hands-on activities.

Qualifications

Professor Madhumita Bhattacharya is a scholar and a well known academic in the field of Educational Technology. Currently, she is a full Professor of Educational Technology at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan. She has more than 25 years of research and teaching experience in universities in India, the United Kingdom, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Estonia, New Zealand, Canada and in the South Pacific. In the recent past she was the Japan Programme Chair at the University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada and in 2012 she has received an Invitation Research Fellowship for Research in Japan based at The Open University of Japan, Chiba, Japan. Previously she was an eLearning Professor at the University of the South Pacific, professor at Athabasca University, Canada and at Massey University, New Zealand. Madhumita specializes in innovative learning environment design and e-portfolios. She is a recipient of several research grants. She is the author and co-author of more than 100 publications in journals, conference proceedings and book chapters. Madhumita serves in many academic committees and journals review boards. She has edited books and written several book chapters. She has presented in many conferences and facilitated workshops and symposiums around the world included quite a few keynote addresses. Mita has co-edited the ebook: Bhattacharya, M., Mach, N. & Moallem, M. (2011). Emerging technologies in Learning: Impact on Cognition and Culture. Chesapeake, VA: AACE (Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education), USA. Professor Steven J Coombs works as an independent consultant and he is also a Professor of Educational Technology at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Steve was formerly the Professor of Teacher Education at the University of the South Pacific. Previously, Steve was Head of the Continuing Professional Development department at Bath Spa University (BSU) in the UK for 11 years. Steve also previously worked as a professor of educational technology at Sonoma State University in California and for another three years as a professor of instructional technology at the National Institute of Education in Singapore. He is also a life member of the Educational Research Association of Singapore. Recently, he was engaged in a shared ebook project introducing the concept and practice of the emerging field of ‘Living Global Citizenship’. Other responsibilities include being external examiner for various postgraduate professional development programmes on behalf of many UK Universities and Vice Chair of the IPDA (International Professional Development Association). Steve was also permanently appointed as a Teaching Fellow at Bath Spa University. Steve’s recent co-edited publication is: Coombs, S., Potts, M. & Whitehead, J. (2014).
