Abstract: With the ongoing and exponential expansion of applications, software, etc. (also known as “bells and whistles”), there are significantly increased options for enhancing bidirectional communication and experiences between faculty and online students. It is important to examine time management strategies necessary to simultaneously promote students’ success and address faculty workload issues. Much discussion and debate continues to occur as to what makes a “quality course”. Many students continue to express their desire for more bells and whistles, however, there is the risk for approaching diminishing returns as well as technology overload, for both professor and student. Of significant importance, it is the content that the student needs, while technology is the vehicle. Selection of type and number of bells and whistles must be thoughtfully considered including both synchronous and asynchronous online learning methods.
