What Does It Mean to Learn in an Online Classroom? Phenomenographical Analysis of First Semester Students
Abstract: This exploratory study examined the perceptions of learning, online learning, and needs for preparation and discipline in non-traditional undergraduate students in their first semester of an all-online program at a for-profit university. College attrition is detrimental to both student and university, so it is critical to understand contributing factors, e.g. online learning readiness and discipline expectations perceived necessary to persist in a college degree program. Students’ discussion forum posts were analyzed using phenomenography, as this method allows for analysis on individual perceptions about a group-wide phenomena. Data from students who persisted (n = 11), as well those who dropped prior to the end of the six-week class session (n = 19) were examined. The results can help universities determine how to design classes and services that will help online learners succeed.
