Evolving the Defense: Exploring and Managing the Technology Enhanced PhD Defense
Abstract: In this session we outline how Bentley University uses technology to enhance the traditional PhD defense. First we review the process and objectives of the traditional PhD defense. Second we outline the characteristics of a technology-enhanced PhD defense with specific reference to Saba. Third we explore the advantages (such as increasing the pool of participants from external examiners and committee members to other PhD students and interest groups) and disadvantages (such as decreased spontaneity, interactivity and involvement), and highlight the key management challenges that need to be considered in the adoption of a technology-enhanced defense (such as planning, backup, support etc.). We conclude by discussing how technology may change both the process and objectives of the PhD defense.
