Abstract: In late 2012, Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, California, partnered with the Gate’s Foundation and MyCollege to found Portmont College, an affordable 100% online Associate Degree program. The degrees offered include Business Administration, Liberal Arts, and Pre-Health/Science. What was remarkable about this AA Program was that there were no textbook fees, and the online classes were created by expert faculty who had been teaching the required classes face-to-face for years. In this presentation of best practices, the instructors will demonstrate how they utilized Canvas, Chats, the Dashboard, Discussion Forums, Google Hangouts, Kaltura, Rubrics, Screencast-O-Matic, Speed Grader, and Microsoft Word, among other applications, to guide students in their development of essential mathematical and compositional skills. The presenters will also address how teaching math and writing-- fundamental general education courses-- can be achieved with quality and rigor, completely online.
