Abstract: The field of e-learning has grown exponentially in its relatively short history. While some subjects are quite conducive to teaching and learning in a digital form, others are more difficult. Collaborative writing is a method that is both highly rewarding and potentially frustrating for those who attempt it. While it is possible to both teach and learn using collaborative writing in an online interface, there are challenges that present themselves. This paper briefly analyzes the e-learning field, methods for collaborative writing, and the basics of online collaborations, then lays the foundation for effective collaborative writing in an e-learning environment.
