Abstract: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) that enroll thousands of students across the globe are being viewed by some as a threat and others as a way to solve critical issues in higher education. This paper demystifies the MOOC phenomenon by providing a brief overview of the types of MOOCs and popular MOOC platforms through which they are offered. Taking a social justice perspective, this paper emphasizes the importance of using MOOCs to provide overlooked populations with access to higher education.
