Abstract: Adapting teaching/learning strategies appropriate for the multigenerational online classroom is a challenge for educators. The pedagogy found in the online classroom shifts the focus from a teacher-centered learning approach to a student-centered learning approach. Four generations of students who could be present in the online classroom are identified and described. Literature reveals that each generation has its own set of values, ideas, beliefs, expectations, ethics, and culture. Educators must understand these differences in order to better understand the learning needs of the students to provide various teaching/learning strategies to promote optimal student outcomes. This paper will briefly discuss the differences among the four generations, address the learning needs of the four generations, and present examples of generation appropriate teaching/learning strategies in the online classroom.
