Universal Design for E-Learning: A Review of the Literature for Higher Education

Abstract: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a pedagogical model that emphasizes learner’s individual differences by providing them access to quality education. UDL achieves this goal as a result of eliminating physical, cognitive and affective barriers. The three main principles of UDL, representation, expression and engagement, help developing an individual learning environment for students. While UDL has been around for about two decades, higher education e-learning programs have been slow to incorporate its principles in their curriculum. The purpose of this paper is to review the state of current research in UDL and identify priorities for empirical inquiry.
