Abstract: The 7C's Community is an online professional development social network on the Ning platform. It combines social networking affordances with quality content including a research-proven video library of teaching exemplars. The videos and other resources are organized around seven “C”s of effective teaching developed by Ron Ferguson at Harvard. The community is open-ended and collaboratively co-constructed. Learning goals are directly related to the context of participant’s classrooms. Scaffolding for productive participation and a facilitative presence are maintained. Motivation comes from district credit for active participation. This is a new research-based, collaborative online PD approach that transforms the meaning of "professional development" from traditional workshops or university courses, disconnected from the classroom, to a direct, personalized form of professional growth appropriate for adult learners. Success is measured by student achievement.
