Abstract: This paper describes the instructional design of an innovative, web-based problem-solving environment entitled ECLIPSE: Environment for Collaborative Learning Integrating Problem Solving Experiences. One of the key components of this design model is the DEEPER framework of scaffolding Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) collaborative problem solving. Based on the advancements in prior research on the scaffolding of problem-based learning, the DEEPER framework consists of six problem-solving steps: Define, Explore, Explain, Present, Evaluate, and Reflect. The present paper reviews prior research on the scaffolding of problem solving and demonstrates how the design of the ECLIPSE learning environment builds on the existing empirical evidence to provide cognitively appropriate and engaging learning experiences to 21st century learners.
