Abstract: This paper reviews the current literature on scaffolding collaborative problem solving in e-learning. The authors describe the incongruence between real-world, workplace problem solving and educational problem solving that is typically practiced in formal learning contexts. Emerging e-solutions for supporting collaborative problem solving are presented followed by a discussion of two research trends that have informed design of collaborative problem solving tools: Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (e.g., Stahl, Koschmann, & Suthers, 2006) and Scaffolded Knowledge Integration (e.g., Linn & Hsi, 2000).
