Institutionally Supported Instructional Design and Development – A Practical Application of National Online Standards
Abstract: The transitions into a knowledge-based society require a reexamination of higher education’s online policies. The paper explores the development of online higher education standards in three distinct phases. The authors have given these the names of the Early Phase, the Middle Phase, and the Current Phase. The Current Phase has seen the regional accrediting agencies for higher education apply their quality standards to online education. The online standards define five areas of institutional activity: 1) institutional context and commitment, 2) curriculum and instruction, 3) faculty support, 4) student support, and 5) evaluation and assessment. These key areas are explored in the literature and in the online standards as they relate to institutional support for instructional design and development. The importance of this support for online teachers and learners is examined practically in some detail and there is a call for further research.
