Easy Global Connections in the Classroom with Webcams
Abstract: We conducted a pilot project to explore the effective use of webcams to link students with faculty from other countries. As part of the London Study abroad fieldwork program at the University of Washington Bothell, graduate Nursing students visited hospitals and hospices in London to compare U.S. and British healthcare systems. In order to better prepare students for their experiences in London, we used webcams to have students meet with selected British faculty in pre-trip online seminars with the goal of enhancing visual links in communication and improving the student learning experience. Another objective was to minimize external support needs by using inexpensive hardware and software. In this session, we will examine how webcams enhanced both intentional and accidental communications, capturing subtleties in areas such as humor and nonverbal cues. We will also look at lessons learned and suggest adaptations for other non-travel groups.
