    Ashland University

Abstract: Disaster response emphasizes communication among multiple providers. This best practices session describes online course design strategies that provided a flexible professional development option for non-traditional, registered nurse students in this area of concern for healthcare providers. An online course focused on responsibilities of civilian registered nurses in disaster response. Content included types of disasters, preparedness, disaster management, vulnerable populations, and legal/ethical/political concerns. Specific best practices to be discussed include strategies such as multiple option self-paced modules; minimal synchronous activities; multiple access options; flexible enrollment, and discussion with experts. Evaluation of these strategies will be briefly addressed using descriptive statistics. Course completion time ranged from 2 to 10 weeks. Most students opted for academic credit. Student feedback demonstrated positive responses to most strategies but suggested review of the flexible enrollment option.
