Abstract: The purpose of this session is to examine practical issues arising when synchronous lectures are implemented at a residential university. It introduces a case study describing an online course delivered as a summer session. It was found that students preferred attending synchronous lectures rather than playback, but some of them reported time conflicts with work or other courses. Also, there was confusion about the attendance policy in synchronous lectures. It is necessary for conducting further research on the optimal length of a synchronous lecture, effective non-verbal communication using technical features, and potential benefits of lectures in full motion video.
