Abstract: DVD (Digital Versatile Disc), technology has in recent years become an accepted standard for home entertainment within the primary field of cinematic film titles. The impact of digital video and audio content, and the issues of quality, have seen the dramatic demise of the VHS cassette and player as the primary consumer device for the typical “Hollywood” film delivery. This paper investigates the use of DVD technology as a teaching and learning tool, and compares the same to that of CDROM and web based instruction in terms of development costs and accessibility. Two case studies are employed to analyse the users experience in terms of the levels of adoption of this technology and the communication of the learning content. The concept of “passive” learning via a television / film instructional environment is also explored as a counterpoint to traditional interactive immersive scenarios.
