Browsing the Web for Research: Development and Evaluation of Information Literacy Tutorials for Undergraduate Students

Best Practices Session ID: 14006
  1. Connie Varnhagen
Department of Psychology, University of Alberta

Abstract: Many undergraduate students are not exposed to primary research and are not encouraged to critically appraise scientific information they encounter in news media or on the Web. As well, many students experience a large and painful learning curve when they are assigned library research and written work in senior level classes. Following a needs assessment with first year students, we developed a series of information literacy tutorials to help undergraduate students develop skills in Web searching, critical appraisal of Web resources, publication database searching, and reading and writing reports empirical research. In this best practices session, we will showcase the tutorials and present the results of the student evaluation.
