Abstract: The objective of the paper is to assess the degree of appropriateness of the different technologies and methodologies currently available to deliver distributed learning in management sciences to geographically spread corporations. For this purpose, the authors – working at a leading UK Business School – start by systematizing a series of guiding principles identified by current academic literature that, translated into best practices maximize the probability of success for any remote learning experience delivered over the internet. The paper then studies the level of compliance of the current virtual MBA modules delivered by the School with these best practices and identifies the main factors of student satisfaction. Finally, in an attempt to formalize the findings as the basis of a theory of e-Learning , several learning delivery methods are classified and mapped according to their suitability to students’ characteristics, teaching styles, skills targeted to be developed, content, infrastructure required, costs and students’ feelings and perceptions.
