Abstract: This randomized control study investigated the impact of the Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® (PowerUp) program on students’ reading achievement. The study was conducted in 5 public middle schools from a suburban school district and took place during the first half of the 2019-20 school year. Three schools were randomly assigned to be in the intervention group that used PowerUp and the remaining two were in the control group. Analyses showed that after the intervention students in the PowerUp group scored significantly higher on a standardized reading assessment than students in the control group. Compared to control students, there was also initial evidence that PowerUp students were more likely to advance benchmark levels in English Language Arts. The present study demonstrates how technology can be leveraged in the classroom to impact reading achievement.
