Abstract: New approaches to assessment strategies such as going gradeless provide opportunities for students to reflect on their own learning, thus positively engaging them in the learning process. The major objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an alternative grading strategy in a redesigned pharmacy skills laboratory course on students’ knowledge and confidence. Assessment with alternative grading motivated students to learn through the use of alternative assessment strategies that included revise and resubmit assignments, purposeful peer and instructor feedback, and self-reflection. Findings from the evaluation of a two-year course redesign indicated that transitioning from a traditional to an alternative grading strategy resulted in higher learning outputs and increased gain in confidence in students’ institutional pharmacy practice skills and abilities.
