Gamification in item-based educational systems – a bibliometric analysis
Abstract: The aim of this study is to present results of the bibliometric analysis performed in the area of online education referring to gamification within item-based educational systems that provide an automated assessment of tasks, supporting, therefore, a learning-by-doing approach to education. This particular area of online education has found increased attention and benefits from the implementation of the gamification approach. In this study, we present a bibliometric analysis of data available in Scopus and Web of Sciences online databases, related to the topic of usage of gamification concepts within item-based educational systems that provide an automated assessment. 683 articles on gamification within such online learning systems published between 2010 and 2020 have been analyzed. According to the study, the number of publications related to the topic of gamification within the item-based online platforms increases during recent years, with achievements and experience points components observed more often than the leaderboards component.
